Favorite Halloween Candies

Brandon Quintanilla, Staff Reporter

Halloween is the best time of year for most kids. All the costumes, candy, decorations, and the scare tactics, and the classic, “Trick-Or-Treat” is a tradition at this point. Three things are repeated every year–asking people for candy, attending parties, and having a good time in general.

Candy plays a huge role. It is safe to assume that without it, a most people would not celebrate Halloween. To some, Halloween is a terrible holiday but a great excuse to get free food.

“My favorite candy would have to be Starbursts. I eat those almost every day!” James Ricketts (10) said, wearing a mask from the popular game, Payday. Starbursts are a brand introduced by Mars in the UK in 1960, named by Peter Phillips, the winner of a competition that won him £5, as Opal Fruits.

“It’s a little hard to choose my favorite candy when I eat so much of it, but I guess mine would have to be Jolly Ranchers,” Adam Nelson (10) said. He wasn’t wearing a costume, but he still decided to go trick-or-treating with everyone else. Jolly Rancher is a brand of sweet, somewhat tangy or sour/sweet hard candy, gummies, fruit chews, jelly beans, lollipops, gelatin desserts, gum, and sodas.

“Despite it not really being called candy, chocolate is my favorite. All except dark chocolate,” Carter Cole (10) said as he wore a mask from the game, Bioshock. Chocolate is a typically sweet, usually brown food preparation of Theobroma cacao seeds, roasted and ground.

“My favorite candy to eat is Sour Patch. I love those,” Quianna Perez (12) said as she walked with her sister. She wasn’t wearing a costume; rather, she was helping her sister Trick-Or-Treat. Sour Patch Kids were originally created by Frank Galatolie of Jaret International, under the name of Mars Men.

Candy plays a huge part in Halloween, originally created to celebrate a holiday respecting the dead.
