National Honor Society is not just about honor roll and top grades. It’s more a way to recognize students with core values, putting in community service to help other people, making changes for all students.

There are currently 279 members in NHS. Officers are Erica Isom, president; Vijay Joshi, vice-president; Megan Chu, secretary; Kaitlin Wykoff, treasurer; and Sofia Rasmussen, historian.

“Students maintain 10 hours of community service and a 4.5 grade point average,” NHS sponsor Mrs. Maggie Johnson said. “NHS students make this club a heartwarming experience to the homeless people or just people in need. They put in the effort to make a huge difference for our community.”

The primary objective in NHS is to follow the values of respect, responsibility, caring, and citizenship. “The way students preserve their membership in NHS is to get their coursework turned in and maintain good grades,” Johnson said.

These Clear Springs ambassadors do more than have meetings and participate in homecoming and pep rallies.

“NHS students have over 50 opportunities to participate in community service events. Students are required to complete 10 hours of community service each semester,” Johnson said.

For example, NHS students worked in Landolt Elementary’s Fall Family Dance in October, attended Gilmore Elementary’s Family Movie Night in November, and will judge a science fair at Bauerschlag Elementary in December. Also, students received community service hours for their volunteer work during Hurricane Harvey clean-up.
