Grammy Nominations and Snubs

Noah Falk, Editor

The 2020 Grammy Awards are around the corner, and the nominations are out.  Radio-regulars including pop stars Taylor Swift and Lizzo have taken a spot in major categories, with expected victories.

Hip-Hop categories raised the most eyebrows when the lists were announced.  Popular artist Tyler the Creator was included in the running for best rap album, despite producing a melodic-pop project in “Igor” early this year.  Rapper J. Cole of the Dreamville label was included in multiple categories, all off of his feature (non-solo) work for other artists/groups.

Pop categories were as expected, with Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Lil Nas X being thrown into the nominations.  Ariana Grande also had a hand in some categories such as “Pop Solo Performance” for her early year hit – “7 Rings”.

A year-to-year problem with the Grammy Awards remains to be the focus on several of the same artists repeatedly receiving nominations and awards, while many artists get overlooked.  The new Bon Iver album received multiple nominations, despite not topping charts and being misplaced in categories.

Plenty of new artists will receive their first awards upon the most memorable night in music.  You can watch the awards on January 26 on CBS.
