Whole Lotta Redundancy

Whole+Lotta+Redundancy

“Jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house, jump out the house”, is the hook off of Playboi Carti’s new song “JumpOutTheHouse” from his long awaited album Whole Lotta Red.

I’ve never listened to Playboi Carti prior to the release of this album, but since many of my peers were very excited about this, I decided I would check it out when it was released. I think I liked it, but for a few unconventional reasons. Playboi Carti’s voice is… interesting. Not good, but infectious. He has a lot of charisma despite his almost childlike yelps. The energy he brings to this project is very similar to that of Johnny Rotten, of the Sex Pistols.

The production on this album is blown out of proportion. Literally. The bass nearly bleeds out of your headphones while demented ice cream truck melodies trickle in the background of songs like “Teen X”, which features Atlanta rapper, Future.

This album was divisive. Many people disliked the vocal inflections that Carti made on the entirety of the record, and I can see why. You either like this album or you don’t.

My only problems with this album, surprisingly, are the Kid Cudi feature (which is so unenthusiastic it’s hilarious) and a couple of songs that just sound like other tracks earlier on the album. Overall it’s a fun record, very energetic and very upbeat, and you’d probably speed if you listened to this while driving. I’d give it a 7/10. Not too shabby, Carti.
