Celebrity Hypocrisy

Eva Dennis, Staff Writer

In the past year, Americans have come to numerous revelations. With the current Coronavirus epidemic and the publicization of the reality of police brutality, protests and activism have become more prevalent than ever before. Consequently, performative activism has become rampant. In an effort to follow what is seen as the “trend” of activism, people of all ages can often be seen involving themselves in hot issues just to seem involved.

It isn’t that the instagram-story activism is worthless, but who is that really helping?

Kim Kardashian, an American celebrity, has recently expressed her opinion on politics, tweeting things similar to “Vote for Biden,” during the time of the 2020 election, and even visiting President Trump in the white house in an attempt to get a presidential pardon for her grandmother. She often tweets about prison reform and those facing death for crimes she feels they did not commit, once commenting on Twitter that she was “Devastated” by the case of Brandon Bernard, a death row inmate convicted of killing 2 people when he was 18.

Kim Kardashian has a net worth of $780 million USD–enough to do more than tweet about these issues.

Posting about social and political issues online does nothing.

Involve yourself. Call the senators, go to the protests, talk about it with your friends.
