Last week the first major snow storm made its way through Texas, canceling school and work for many. Temperatures got below freezing in Galveston, with winter storm advisories issued in our county on Thursday night into Friday morning. 

The main concern with the storm was how the power grid would be affected from the cold weather. Last year, Winter Storm Uri shut off power and water for over 9 million Texans. 

The power grid held up during the winter weather this year, however ERCOT expert Caitlin Smith thinks that Uri was much worse than the weather we experienced last week. 

“Maybe Uri is a level five test and this is level three, and this shows we can pass level three,” Smith said.

Preparation for a winter storm is very similar to preparing for a tropical storm. Stock up on non-perishable foods, bottled water, and batteries in case the power goes out. It is also important to stay warm in freezing temperatures. Don’t drive on icy roads, and check with the local weather stations to stay informed on storm patterns.

The next few weeks are going to be filled with sunshine as the air starts to warm up. However, there is a slight chance of rain next Wednesday and Thursday that will bring the temperatures back down to the upper 50’s for a few days. While another winter storm is not in the forecast now, it’s good to stay prepared.
