Discord Disaster

Thanks to a few users, Discord now has the nation’s attention. After discovering that classified documents were being shared on the platform, one user will be facing federal court.

The event is being called “one of the worst leaks of national security in years,” and it all started with a 21 year old who wanted to impress his friends online. Member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, Jack Teixeira, had to face federal courts on Friday for distributing pictures and information from classified information. The FBI arrested him last Thursday after discovering that Teixeira had been using his security clearance to gain access to top secret documents and send them to people online.

The documents had originally been sent in a server called Thug Shaker Central, but began to spread further across the platform. The original server was composed of 20-30 people, mostly teenagers, who had no intent on wrecking national security. Teixieira started spreading information from sensitive documents back in December 2022 and pictures of the documents around January. Many of the documents contained information about the war with Ukraine which ended up on Russian-language telegram programs and 4chan.
