In the Hamptons, South Carolina there were the gruesome murders of 22-year-old Paul Murdaugh and 52-year-old Margaret Murdaugh; wife and son of eminent lawyer Alex Murdaugh.
It began on June 7th, 2021, when Alex Murdaugh, descending from a long line of lawyers in the South Carolina, Hampton area, called 911 to report the deaths of his wife and son. An entire year had gone by before police had even identified a suspect or motive for their murders. Until July of 2022, Alex Murdaugh was indicted.
Murdaugh was also charged with innumerable financial crimes which he had stolen from his clients; prosecutors estimated $8.8 million from a wide range of clients he has had in the past.
Through closer scrutiny into the case authorities discovered many interesting things. Initially, Mr. Murdaugh told the police he found his wife and son’s bodies near the kennels where they kept their dogs. However, phone records indicate that he left to visit his dementia burdened mother around 9 p.m. He said he then went back to his house and discovered the bodies. Prosecutors believe he killed his son and wife prior to leaving, and then attempted to establish an alibi.
When police officials arrived at the scene, he informed them his son Paul had been getting frequent threats regarding a serious boating accident he had been involved in a few years earlier.
Retired police officer Charles Marks shared what he thought of the case, saying, “This was a very tragic and sad thing that happened. Unfortunately, a lot of people think they’re above the law and try to get away with it; luckily, we have the law to ensure that justice is served,” Charles Mark, retired police officer, said about the case.
Since he was convicted, Alex has requested an investigation in new allegations against the County clerk of court who apparently tampered with the jury. Rebecca Hill (the alleged) spoke frequently with the foreperson and told them not to believe Mr. Murdaugh’s testimony and pressured them into making a hasty guilty verdict.
