A child in Arkansas died due to a brain eating amoeba while playing in a splashpad. A rise in brain eating cases has been rising due to the extreme heat which is causing the amoeba to grow and spread faster. There is a chance that they are resting on the floor of pools or other bodies of water. The amoeba called Naegleria lives in soil and warm freshwater lakes, rivers, ponds, and hot springs in rare cases they can be transmitted from swimming pools. The amoeba enters through the nose, so if you keep it above the water, you should be safe, although swimming is not recommended.
The fatality rate of this bacteria is 97%. Only four people survived out of the 157 known victims from 1962-2022. The symptoms include severe headaches, fever, nausea, and vomiting. They progress to stiff necks, seizures, and coma that can lead to death. This amoeba typically thrives in warm water and is typically found in young males because they have a higher chance to dive into the water and get it in their nose. According to the CDC, heatwaves, when the air and water temperatures are higher than usual, may also allow the amoeba to thrive.
