Since more Americans are getting diagnosed with heart problems, the American Heart Association has started linking this new heart disease to obesity, diabetes, and kidney disease. The goal in recognizing the condition, cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome, or CKM, is to get earlier diagnosis and treatment for people at high risk of dying.
Right now, “we are seeing the health consequences of all these conditions interacting and leading to earlier presentation with “heart disease,” Dr. Chiadi E. Ndumele said. Evidence has shown that metabolic risk factors such as abdominal fat, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar can negatively affect not only other organs, but the heart.
New medications to treat conditions that are part of the CKM, such as kidney disease, diabetes, and obesity have resulted in decreases in cardiovascular diseases. With all the organs interacting with each other in the body, they have been having negative effects on the heart.
In general, when you look at all the organs together you can point out diseases earlier, and you can prevent bad cardiovascular outcomes, like heart failure, heart attacks, strokes, and even more.
