On November 25th, another endangered Sumatran rhino was brought to the world at the Indonesian sanctuary in Way Kambas National Park by a rhino named Delilah who was born in 2016. This is the second birth of this species to happen within the last two months, showing the dedication these people have in order to bring this species back. This currently unnamed male was the fifth rhino born at the sanctuary since 2012, according to The Washington Post
In 2019 there was an assessment organized by the government that confirmed there were less than 50 Sumatran rhinos left living in the world, and all of them are in Indonesia, where this sanctuary is. This makes them one of the most endangered rhinos, the other one being the Javan rhinos. These animals are endangered due to habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade. These rhinos only reproduce in certain environments, but since losing these environments it has caused the population to rapidly decline.
The Sumatran rhino is the only Asian Rhino that has 2 horns. They can grow to 5 feet tall, about the size of a baby giraffe, and can weigh somewhere in between 500 kg (1,102 pounds) and 960 kg (2,110 pounds.) This male calf weighed around 25 kg and was the result of natural mating, and last month the female that was born in the same facility was 27 kg.
