As the temperature incrementally drops and pumpkin spice drinks appear in storefronts, people look for ways to celebrate the season of fallen leaves and ghost stories. Movies and TV shows have always been a huge part of that celebration, bringing the feeling of mystery and cool air even when the weather refuses to cooperate. For a small but dedicated following, nothing ushers in that mood more than the animated series Over the Garden Wall.
It opens with a frog playing the piano spinning into focus on a black background while a song about autumn and stories and madness plays, setting the tone of the series. Its main characters, Wirt and Greg, are lost in a strange forest, uncertain of how they got there or how to get home. To make matters worse they must be wary of The Beast, a powerful creature that spells certain doom for everyone it comes across. From ghostly romances to ferries where high-class frogs are particularly fond of bassoons, the brothers wander through all sorts of fantastical scenarios searching for a way home. However, underneath all the wonder, a dark side to the forest refuses to be forgotten.
The series is atmospheric in a way that perfectly encompasses the Halloween season, and its open-ended nature also leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Even now, ten years after it first aired, fans still buzz with theories about the history of the forest and its inhabitants. With summer officially coming to a close, there couldn’t be a more perfect time to discover what exactly lurks just over the garden wall.
