As of Sunday, South Carolina is in a state of emergency. Still recovering from hurricane Helene, there is another natural disaster. The governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, declared that Georgia and the Carolinas are being destroyed by wildfires. It is said the fires happened suddenly and without warning, spreading quickly and destroying everything in its wake.
South Carolina is no stranger to wildfires, with fires claiming about 25 homes per year in an average of around 3,000 fires. It appears this one came with little warning. Having over 175 different fires, scorching over 6.6 square miles of land, was reported on Sunday by the national weather service. The count lowered to 163 fires by Monday morning. The Red Cross reports that over 135 families have relocated to due to the fires.
“Personnel will continue to staff this incident until the fire is contained,” the South Carolina Forestry Commission reassured.
About 500 men and woman have been working around the clock to quickly and efficiently extinguish the flames. No injuries or damage to property but they along with the state officials have strongly advised family to evacuate the surrounding area and those in the direct path have been ordered to evacuate for safety.
According to state and federal officials the team of firefighters and many other organizations have managed to control the fires and contain the mass of them. They believe that they will be able to extinguish the flames in a timely manner. Other states such as Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina have also reported wildfires but those are said to be the normal for this time of year.
State officials are encouraging the public to further educate themselves on wildfire causes and how they can help in preventing them.
