CCISD vaccination rates place the school district below herd immunity. The CDC recommends that at least 95% of a population be vaccinated. With a 94.4% of kindergartners inoculated against measles, CCISD isn’t missing the mark by much. Still, data like this tells a story if you know how to look.
Public school districts like CCISD tend to meet standards or be just barely below. Most have vaccination rates of 90% or above. There are some outliers though. Alief ISD, for example, has a vaccination rate of 83.6%.
Private schools are a bit more of a mixed bag. Some are 100% vaccinated while others are below 90%. Some reach 50% or lower, though those tend to be on the other side of Houston. Most Catholic schools are 100% vaccinated, probably owing to a vaccination requirement to attend school. Some general Christian schools like First Baptist Academy of Baytown also seem to have these requirements. The data on most Christian or secular private school seems to indicate a lack of requirement.
The worst offenders by far are public charter schools. While some, like George I Sanchez and Draw Academy meet and exceed the 95% expectation, most do not. Even though there are far fewer charter schools than public or private schools, charter schools are much more likely to miss the mark. Most of these schools seem to have vaccination rates in the 80% range. Yes Prep Public Schools Inc. and Reve Preparatory Charter School have the worst vaccination rates among charter schools with both being in the 60% range. This seems to indicate a lack of vaccination requirements similar to private schools. Especially low numbers could indicate a general distrust of vaccines.
Facts:
- Most public charter schools in the area are less than 95% vaccinated (least common school type)
- Private schools tend to have either 100% vaccination rates or be below CDC guidelines (just a trend, not completely accurate)
- Catholic schools tend to have 100% vaccination rates. Other Christian schools tend to be more of a mixed bag.
- Most public schools that miss the 95% mark are still in the 90% range
