Imagine the biggest, fastest, most high-tech racing competition in the world. That is Formula 1. It is where car companies push the limits of speed, design, and technology, competing on tracks across the world.
In November 2024, a deal was struck between the FIA—Formula 1’s governing body—and the American car company, General Motors. This deal allowed for a team to join during the 2026 season.
Now, Cadillac, the American brand best known for its luxury cars, is jumping into the mix. It’s a surprising move that has people wondering how Cadillac’s car will go up against famous racing names like Red Bull Racing and McLaren.
Currently, there is only 1 other American Formula 1 Team, Haas F1 Team, however, the joining of Cadillac has created a huge moment for the both the company and sport.
Backed by General Motors, this team is set to debut in the 2026 season with a strong driver lineup: Valtteri Bottas and Sergio “Checo” Pérez. Bottas raced for Kick Sauber in the 2024 racing season, while Perez raced for Red Bull Racing. Bottas and Perez have 106 podium finishes between them but lost their seats at the end of the 2024 racing season. Furthermore, IndyCar race winner, Colton Herta, has been named test driver for the team. “To be a part of Cadillac F1’s entry at such a pivotal time is something I couldn’t pass up,” Herta said.
Formula 1 is a popular topic among many generations, even the younger generation. Many students find interest in Formula 1, and even the joining of Cadillac. “There will be technical difficulties on smaller circuits, but [the joining of Cadillac] will bring good competition,” Logan Atchison (10) said.
When Cadillac debuts in F1, it will mark history for the American car brand, as well as in Formula 1 history.
