Last Friday, September 15, hundreds of Charger football fans packed into Veterans Memorial Stadium for the first official football game of the season after the mass devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

The Clear Springs Chargers paid their respects to the victims and heroes of Harvey by wearing “Texas Strong” decals on both sides of their helmets. Before kickoff, the Charger student body, staff, team, and family commemorated the many first responders of League City by having them run across the field carrying an American Flag.

The Chargers stormed into the stadium and won the coin toss against the Bulldogs. After kickoff, senior Peyton Sawyer ran the ball for a touchdown within the first minute of the game. The Chargers ended the first quarter with a 25 yard field goal by senior Seth Porter, making the score 10-0.

During the third quarter, LaPorte put themselves on the scoreboard by kicking a 34 yard field goal. Later in the third, freshman Garrett Rooker  passed to Sawyer to score a touchdown, pushing the Chargers ahead with a 17-3 lead. Junior Todd Hudson wrapped up the game with a 28 yard touchdown, dragging a LaPorte Bulldog into the end zone.

The Clear Springs Chargers ended their first game with a 24-3 win, starting their season off with a 1-0 record.
