Student United Way Leads the Way

Student United Way is a good opportunity to get involved in the community and learn more about what is happening in the world, Arin Nelson (12), president, said.

SUW is an organization designed to help people in the community. For example, recently they went to Galveston and fed the homeless at an area church. They are also sponsoring a coat drive, and are currently hosting Hunger Games Food Drive, a canned food drive where clubs/organizations/classes compete to collect nonperishable items for the Galveston County food bank. Last year, Clear Springs collected 12,000 pounds of food.

Nelson wanted to join SUW because she wanted to help people and do something beneficial in the community.

SUW has affected her life as it has been an eye-opening experience, she said. It has made her grateful for everything she has and doesn’t necessarily need.

“Freshman year I joined SUW to do active things in the community and it was a good opportunity to serve others,” Nelson said.

For Nelson, her daily schedule includes juggling many responsibilities. She is the photography editor for yearbook, makes props for theatre, and is a full-time student.

“SUW has made me realize how lucky we are to have the things we have, seeing people so grateful for what they receive when they have nothing is such an humbling experience,” Nelson said.
