Wormholes are theoretical tunnels through spacetime that could essentially create shortcuts for long journeys across the universe.
Wormholes were predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity. With the understanding of gravity that scientists have, it helps connect to the idea that wormholes would bend and warp spacetime according to the motion of the contents of the universe.
Wormholes make it physically possible for something to travel from universe to universe in half the time. The only flaw with this theory is, well, we have no evidence that wormholes exist. And even if we did, there would be no proof to support it, as humans would die if they tried to enter one. Extreme tidal forces would stretch the body, causing spaghettification. This phenomenon happens within black holes as well. The only difference is that black holes would be much more destructive.
Pop culture also displays wormholes, some media that showcase this include:
- The Avengers
- Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
- Stargate
- Interstellar
- Phantasm
- Stranger Things
These aren’t 100% scientifically accurate; but they help spark interest and curiosity in the real physics behind wormholes and the mysteries of the universe.
Wormholes are theoretical, but the possibility of them being real is wonderful.
